Tackling Water Issues in the Mountains

 

Location – 17 villages in Tehri Garhwal and Uttarkashi districts of Uttarakhand.

Partner NGO/institution – Himalaya Seva Sangh (HSS)

Date of Commencement: March 2007

Expected Date of Conclusion: February 2009

 

Summary

The proposed model is aspiring to institutionalize a community based water supply system that will ensure perennial water availability to the local habitation by tapping the existing water harvesting structures.

 

Why the Project?
  • To ensure adequate water supply system around the year on sustainable basis.
  • For building capability of the community to manage their drinking water system.

 

Target group

The beneficiaries of the project will be the mountain communities, especially in the Uttarakhand region.

 

Activities Planned 
  • Research and Documentation of different systems of Water Harvesting and Management in the Mountain systems.
  • Construction of Chaals (Small ponds) for an effective recharge zone management.
  • Roof Water Harvesting
  • Construction of Water Canals
  • Water quality testing and treatment
  • Construction of slow sand filters
  • Organizing Water Forums “Pani Panchayat”.
