Regenerating drinking water and Salinity Reduction in the little Rann of Rapar Block of Kutch

 

Location – 16 villages in Rapar block of Kutch district, Gujarat.

Partner NGO/institution – Samerth Charitable Trust, Gujarat.

Expected Date of Conclusion: March 2009

 

Summary

The project aims to provide drinking water facilities and reduce the salinity content from the land of the poor and marginalized communities (Kolis and Dalits) in the project villages. Dug wells and earthen dams will be constructed on the Mevasa river, as sources of drinking water. This project will be undertaken with active participation from the target group.

 

Why the Project?

  • To ensure adequate and safe drinking water to all the households through out the year
  • To prevent distress migration due to lack of water availability.

 

Target group

The project will benefit 2830 people of 623 families in 16 villages.

 

Activities Planned

  • 19 earthen check dams (talavadi) will be constructed.
  • 17 dug wells will be constructed in the down stream of Mevasa river.
  • With the technical support from CAZRI, Cherry plantation work will be undertaken which reduces the salinity of the area.
  • Trees like Piludi, Neelgiri, Neem, Sweet Neem, etc. in the  nurseries will be developed to promote plantation in the land bunds and near the dug wells.
