Suvarna Jala – RWH in 23,000 schools in Karnataka – Government of Karnataka RDPR project with KSCST Partner NGO/institution: BIRD-K, CART, Geo Rainwater Board, Prerana Date of commencement: August 2006 Expected Date of conclusion: August 2007 Summary  Suvarna Jala” is the rainwater-harvesting programme in Government Schools funded by the Department of Rural Development & Panchayat Raj (RDPR) in order to provide safe drinking water for school children by harvesting the rainwater using simple systems. The Project is implemented in 23,682 schools across Karnataka and is probably the largest such project in the world.
Arghyam proposes to play a role in improving the quality of the implementation of the programme in these schools. This will primarily be by facilitating a network of Rainwater Harvesting experts and grass-roots NGOs who would be involved in capacity-building and monitoring the programme. Why This Project? - To try and improve the quality of implementation of the Suvarna Jala programme by introducing Information, Education and Communication activities.
- To set an example of a public-private partnership bringing out the best in each other.
Target group Children and teachers, SDMC members and through them the communities of above-mentioned eight districts. Activities Planned: Arghyam is partnering with the Government preliminarily in the following areas:
- Building capacities of Schools including SDMC, teachers and students for making best use of the installed RWH system. This will be done through targeted IEC materials and interaction with experts.
- Organizing a network of rainwater experts to provide maintenance and technical expertise.
- Developing two schools as models in water and sanitation in each district
- Doing research on how to make water potable at the school level.
