Summary

Arghyam has supported a Campaign for popularizing Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) in a flood prone region in North Bihar. The second phase of the Abhiyan has been designed based on the experiences from the first phase. Apart from propagating the temporary rainwater harvesting system as an alternative source of drinking water during floods and monsoon, the campaign will also develop a comprehensive local water management system based on the existing impact of recurring floods on land and water sources.

Why the project?
  • Flood in north Bihar is a recurring disaster.
  • Lack of clean drinking water and sanitation facilities along with inadequate health facilities adversely affect the people, particularly women.
Target group – 21 Panchayats in North Bihar covering about 1,78,647 people.

Activities planned
  • Developing strategies for Phase II in discussion with the beneficiaries in the existing villages.
  • Identifying the Panchayats where work has to begin.
  • Water analysis (both river and rain), spreading awareness through Jaldoots to various groups of people.
  • Preparation for implementing integrated water management model in one village.
  • Implementing local technique for removing iron from groundwater and implementing eco-sanitation facilities.
  • Rain water harvesting structures to be built in.
  • Complete documentation of the activities carried out and then disseminating it by workshops and seminars.
Project Status: Ongoing.
