This project was implemented in a village in Manipur with focus on making the village open defecation free. Intensive education and awareness building activities were carried out, access to sanitation facilities increased and knowledge on good hygiene practices imparted.
Ecosan was also promoted as a technology option with local innovation– such as use of local material for superstructure etc. to help bring down costs. Manure from the Ecosan toilet was used as fertilizer. Through construction of household toilets, there was a reduction in open defecation. This also decreased disease burden and helped women and girls access dignified sanitation.
- Training was given to local government and awareness building workshops were conducted.
- More than 55 families were motivated to construct double pit toilets.
- A few model Ecosan toilets were constructed.
