OUR APPROACH

Building rural water infrastructure is only the first step. Ensuring that these systems continue to function reliably over time requires strong local institutions, clear responsibilities, and sustained support for operations and maintenance.

Across India, thousands of village water supply schemes must be maintained every day. Pumps must run, sources must remain reliable, distribution networks must be maintained, and faults must be addressed quickly. Yet frontline workers and community institutions responsible for managing these systems often operate with limited technical support, fragmented information, and weak feedback loops.

Arghyam’s work in operations and maintenance focuses on strengthening the systems that enable reliable service delivery. This includes improving how schemes are monitored, helping institutions identify problems early, and ensuring that local actors have the information and support needed to respond effectively.

A central part of this work involves strengthening the role of communities and frontline workers who manage and monitor village water systems. When supported with clear processes, trusted data, and responsive institutions, they can help ensure that water services remain reliable long after infrastructure is built.

Through partnerships across states, Arghyam works to strengthen the systems, institutions, and feedback loops required to keep rural water services functioning sustainably.
